In 1950 a group of members of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America became unhappy with the lack of local activities. As a result, discussions grew about forming a club along the North Shore. This all came about from the meetings of the following people: Edward Winslow, John Greenwood, Roger Cutting, Malcolm Thompson, Richard Merrill, Hayden Shepley, Leslie Hatt, Percival Wilson, Howard Whipple and Karl Killorin.
In November, 1951, Hayden Shepley contacted, via postcard, old car enthusiasts living in the North Shore area and arranged a meeting. On the evening of January 11, 1952, twenty-seven people gathered at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem, MA. At this meeting Hayden Shepley was chosen as Presiding Officer and Richard Merrill to act as Temporary Clerk.
On January 18, the Nominating Committee met at Ernest Johnson's home in Beverly. On January 25, 1952, meeting at the Hawthorne Hotel, those present decided on the duesage classes, the present name of the club, and elected the first officers: President - Richard Merrill; Vice-President - Ernest Johnson; Secretary/Treasurer - Hayden Shepley; Directors - William Mitchell, Percival Wilson and Edward Winslow.
At the February 8, 1952 meeting of the Board, topics discussed included applications for membership, meetings-meet formats, and to hold a contest to design a club emblem. Dues having been set for $5.00 for Essex County residents, and $3.00 for non-Essex County residents, were first collected on February 29, 1952.
At the April 18, 1952 meeting, the winning design of Hayden Shepley was selected for the new club emblem. The 3-1/4" diameter emblems were made of solid brass stock in relief with a green enamel field. The organization was officially established as "The North Shore Old Car Club, Inc." with the filing of the Articles of Organization at the Massachusetts State House on June 22, 1954.
The purpose of the club was and remains today to encourage members to acquire, restore, exhibit old cars, and also to encourage the preservation of printed matter about old cars, and to serve as a conduit for the relaying of technical and historical facts pertaining to old automobiles.
Presently the North Shore Old Car Club, Inc. averages over 300 members and holds approximately 40 meets or events each year.
